How to Change Your Name – The Deed Poll

Name Change

If you want to change your name in this country, you need a Protocol of Deeds. You probably know it as a ‘deed poll’. A deed poll is a legal document that acts as proof of your name change. Sound fancy? Not really. It is just a legal commitment on your part to do three things:

  1. stop using your former name(s) completely
  2. only use your new name
  3. have everyone else use your new name only

Since this document is a deed, an attorney must draft it. A witness must also be present when you sign. Once you execute the deed, you need to take it to Inland Revenue to pay stamp duty. Afterwards, you register it with the Registrar General at the Ministry of Legal Affairs. When the deed is registered, it has an official seal. That seal says that the deed is genuine.

The Effect of a Deed Poll

Even after you register your deed poll, your original certificates and documents are still valid. However, if you want to change them, you can simply take your deed poll to the institution.

Note – You don’t need a deed to change your name after you get married. You only need to show your marriage certificate.
