Here, we outline the process at MHLS from your initial consultation to retaining us to getting your matter done.
Booking a Consultation
Before we can represent you, we need to know about your matter. Hence, the consultation. Our consultations last for one hour held virtually via Microsoft Teams.
What happens at a consultation?
The consultation is a preliminary meeting with one of our attorneys to get a sense of your legal issue. At this meeting, the attorney may outline the possible options that you may have going forward. Please be advised that, at this stage, we have not yet decided to represent you. You are only a client of MHLS after you have signed a retainer.
Following the consultation, MHLS sends you a letter detailing the instructions you gave, the options available to you, and information about how much we will charge to deal with your matter. You should note that MHLS reserves its right not to take on any matter or client as outlined in the Code of Ethics.
The Retainer
If you decide to move forward with your matter, you will sign a retainer agreement. A retainer is a contract of employment between the attorney and the client for the provision of legal services. Our retainer is made up of the letter of engagement together with our general terms and conditions of business. This letter of engagement is specific to your matter and the fees we will charge. You should carefully read these two documents as they contain important information on how your matter will be conducted.
Conduct of Your Matter
After you sign your retainer agreement, you will be enrolled in our client portal (this is separate from your ‘My Account’ page). There, you can access all documentation on your file. Also, you can also approve drafts, book appointments, give instructions, see your account balance and more. We keep you abreast of your matter through this portal, and if necessary, by sending you additional emails.
